Chapter 7

"Dr. Moore's office."

Diana pitched her voice a little louder than normal in order to be heard above the sounds of crying children. "Lynette, it's Diana. Have you got a minute?

"Sure. Hang on for a sec, OK?"

Diana heard muffled voices and a few clicks followed by several seconds of silence before her friend came back on the line.

"I'm here. I had to transfer your call to the back hall. It's shot day and there isn't a dry eye in the house. What's up?"

"Nothing major. Do you mind if we have dinner at six thirty tonight instead of five."

"You got a date?"

Diana laughed. "Hardly. Something's wrong with Scottlyn. Her eyes have been red all day, and she was listless and unresponsive in class. I've only known her a week, but this is not like her. Poor kid doesn't have much of a support system. I told her to wait for me outside the teacher's lounge after school, and I'd take her home. I need to find out what's wrong."

"I'm proud of you."

"Why?"

"You've really taken an interest in this girl. I think you're good for each other."

"Yeah, well, that remains to be seen. Dinner at six thirty?"

"That's fine. I'll say a prayer for both of you in the meantime."

Diana slid the phone into her bag and headed to the teacher's lounge. She found Scottlyn waiting for her on the hard bench, head resting on the raised back, eyes closed.

"Hey, I'm ready if you are."

Scottlyn's eyes jerked open as she scrambled to her feet. "Sorry. I didn't get much sleep last night."

"Baby keep you awake?"

The youngster shrugged. "Not the baby. Just...stuff."

Diana let the subject drop until they got to her car. The February weather had taken a springtime turn. No wind and almost seventy degrees. Milkshake weather. She marveled at the thought. The weather wasn't the only thing changing. Her appetite seemed to be coming back in a big way.

She scooted behind the wheel of the Camry and buckled her seat belt, waiting for Scottlyn to do the same. "You girls hungry?"

Scottlyn chuckled. "We are always hungry." She jerked. "Ouch! Brattling!"

"You OK?"

"This kid has a vicious kick. Give me your hand."

Diana allowed Scottlyn to take her hand and place it on her stomach. Several seconds passed. "What am I supposed to be feeling?"

"Wait for it."

When the sharp little kick came, it was hard enough to raise Diana's eyebrows. She left her hand in place and waited for a repeat performance. The second jab was just as hard. "Does she do that all day?"

Scottlyn shook her head, grinning down at her belly. "No. As long as I'm moving, she's pretty quiet. The motion must keep her pacified. The minute I sit or lie down, her work out begins."

"You're going to have your hands more than full in a few months." Diana's casual remark must have hit a tender target. Her heart broke when Scottlyn's blue eyes filled with tears.

"Yeah, well not if my dad has anything to say about it." She sniffed and searched her purse.
